No need to drive to see the mountains from Falkensteiner Camping Grubhof – the Austrian Alps are right there in front of you. This riverside site is in the Saalach alpine valley, a stretch that's used by many as a base for cycling along the river or hiking up into the mountains. This handy base is just a 35-minute walk or a five-minute drive from the Almenwelt Lofer gondola, which will whisk you up to over 1,300 metres. At the top, there are circular hiking trails and mountain-biking routes to take your pick from. In the winter, skiing takes over the same area, with 46 kilometres of slopes that have a reputation for being one of the most family-friendly skiing destinations in the country. While you’re busy rambling or coasting downhill, you may just find your mouth watering at the thought of a warm meal back at the site's Wirsthaus, which is a traditional tavern with a nice and roomy outdoor seating area. If you’ve got time on your side, schedule in some proper detox time at the on-site sauna or lie back next to the river and leaf through the book you packed. Other thoughtful details on site include the small shop that sells fresh bread every morning and the modern showers and toilets. In the summer, the team will also hand over a Salzburger Saalachtal Card — included in summer — which grants you free entry to some of the attractions in the wider region (who doesn’t love a freebie?). Dogs are also welcome on site.

Falkensteiner Camping Grubhon places you right in the Saalach valley, a part of the Austrian Alps that’s considered prime ground for hiking, cycling, skiing and all sorts of other extreme sports, including kayaking and white-water adventures down the popular Saalach river course. Most of your adventures, though, can begin from the Almenwelt Lofer gondola (five minutes’ drive)… Up you go, and you’ll arrive at hiking loops and mountain-biking trails with views that are simply quite unforgettable. Bigger, more dramatic climbs can be done in the Lofer Mountains. But for a quieter day on the trails, the pilgrimage church at Maria Kirchental (10 minutes) is a good spot for a gentle half-day stroll through the forest. The gorges of Vorderkaserklamm (10 minutes) and Seisenbergklamm (10 minutes) are two other nice detours. In the winter, you could drive up to the Heutal ski resort (25 minutes) to try out the toboggan run or cross-country trails. Past the mountains is Salzburg (45 minutes) for a day in the city too.
