Escape busy city life and unwind thoroughly at Bungawalbin Wildlife Retreat, five minutes’ drive from Bungawalbin in New South Wales. This is the spot for you if you’re determined to spend some time fully immersed in nature: it’s a well-maintained bush campsite set amid native palms and eucalyptus trees in a natural wetland setting. As well as being a haven for endemic wildlife, it’s half an hour’s drive from sandy beaches and about an hour from the surfing hub of Byron Bay. You can expect level, firm surfaces for an easy setup on generous, tree-lined grassy pitches, with ample room for awnings and a quiet, low‑traffic layout for restful nights of sleep. Individual pitches are tucked into the native fauna for extra privacy – and of course you are surrounded by nature, with the scent of eucalyptus all around and star-filled skies overhead on clear nights. Handy amenities comprise clean, accessible hot showers and toilets, drinking-water taps, private-use firepits and picnic tables on all the pitches. Anything you need to know? Local attractions

There’s lots of exploring to be done in Bungawalbin National Park (15 minutes’ drive), which is laced with four-wheel drive tracks leading through native forest; you can also explore the bush on foot, by bike or on horseback (half an hour to the local stables). If you’d like to get out on the water, hire kayaks and paddleboards to have a splash along Bungawalbin Creek (10 minutes). Down on the coast, you can surf off Ten Mile Beach (40 minutes), and in Bundjalung National Park (45 minutes) there are clifftop hiking trails and sandy beaches for swimming and picnics. You may also get lucky and spot kangaroos grazing on open grassland, and dolphins are often sighted in the seas off Pippi Beach (55 minutes). If you’d like to be sure of seeing some indigenous wildlife on your trip into New South Wales, visit Broadwater Koala Reserve or Koala Gardens (both 25 minutes), both sanctuaries for injured koalas in protected bushland.
