  • Well-maintained park within walking distance of ancient Colchester
  • Easy access to London, East Anglia, Suffolk and Essex
  • Three facility blocks: never queue for the toilet or shower
Excellent excellent Essex... an easy hour from London, a comely coastline, and close to East Anglia, Constable Country and the Sussex coast for day trips – it's all very excellent indeed. And then there's Colchester, the ancient town settled by the Romans way back when and full of superb sights, museums and leisure offerings – all very excellent too. If you're visiting Essex for any of the above, a march along to high-quality Colchester Country Park should be an excellent option, as it's within walking distance of Colchester city centre and close to the coasts of Essex and Sussex. Arrange a day trip to London from here or use the park as a base to or from ferry ports: but a day or two in Colchester should surely be had too... The park is set in pretty parkland with roomy pitches and spacious fields. Facilities are plentiful – no queuing here – and include three spotlessly kept amenities blocks with private cubicles and free hot water. There's also a dedicated disabled unit, dishwashing and laundry areas, a large play area and a shop.

What customers say

This neat park has large, flat spots and a warm welcome. Ablutions generally clean but some find them old-fashioned. Kids love the play area. Near the A12, so can be noisy at night, and no Wi-Fi is often mentioned. Still, many find it handy and would come back.

Electric grass pitch

Liked Friendly welcome received at reception. Walked into Cholchester on a wooded path. Bathrooms are old fashioned but clean, On 2 evenings there was music and burger night and pizza night. Very enjoyable.

Electric grass pitch

Liked Great value for money. Great location for walks.

Disliked Pitch was very small. Vehicles/tents too close for safety I felt
Toilets were clean but dated. All working fine though. Downside for the shower is having to press the stopper every 2 seconds. No WiFi on site. Near A13. I wasn't disturbed on pitch 39 but other side of campsite almost back onto the Rd.

Electric grass pitch

Liked Location to city centre, much cheaper than a hotel when Colchester in the park is on , saved £210 a night, only stayed one night great for a stopover.

Disliked Road noise, dated facilities, however clean and functional . Apparently the bus stop is just over the road, this is a lie.

Electric grass pitch

Liked We liked our grass pitch and close proximity to the showers and toilets. We were able to get a good signal for the TV. Local buses were not far from the site and we left the van at the pitch to save driving or parking in Clacton or Colchester.
I liked the individual wash basins in the shower block.

Disliked A lot of road noise but we didn’t hear it when we were in bed.
The facilities, although very clean, were dated. Only 2 showers per block, not enough if the site was full.

Local attractions

Classic Colchester is a popular pick for holidaymakers in the area, who come to see Colchester Castle and Castle Museum with its extensive exhibit on Roman Colchester; the social history Hollytrees Museum and the Natural History Museum in the city's former All Saints' Church. Plenty of restaurants, pubs and shops are here too, as well as decent leisure options like a leisure centre, ten-pin bowling, roller skating, the Mercury Theatre, the Arts Centre and the Minories Gallery. If you're on holiday with kids, Colchester Zoo is always a hit, as is the East Anglian Railway Museum at Chappel which has heaps of activities for young explorers. The Colne Valley Railway's mile of track is at the old village of Castle Hedingham, also well worth a look for its Norman Hedingham Castle and timber-framed medieval buildings. The area surrounding Colchester Country Park is excellent walking, cycling and nature spotting land with miles of nature reserves, footpaths and bike trails: head from Colchester to Alresford a mile and a half away or join up with the 81-mile long Essex Way from Epping to Harwich.
