  • Peaceful park with mountain views on the banks of the Var river
  • A 10-minute drive to Cians gorge and 10 mins’ walk to Puget-Théniers
  • Spacious communal lounge with library, wifi and board games
Pondering a getaway within a short drive of a protected natural park in the Alpes-Maritimes department…? Or how about a stay near not one but three natural parks instead? If that sounds like a hol especially tailored to you, book in at Camping Lou Gourdan, around half an hour’s drive from the edges of peak-covered Mercantour National Park, the towering Verdon Gorge and the forested hills of the Préalpes d'Azur… This site’s a hotspot for hiking in lush scenery without going too far at all – it also sits right on the Var river around a 10-minute drive from the Cians gorge, with mesmerising views of hills from its grounds. If the picnic basket needs filling for trips out canyoning, rafting, canoeing and climbing in the local area, shops selling French fare are in the pretty village of Puget-Théniers, 10 minutes’ walk away; buses and trains – including the traditional Pignes steam train with scenic views – also leave from here to the Côte d'Azur city of Nice (with journeys taking about an hour and a half). Staying on site for a while instead? Rest up in between adventures in the bright and spacious communal lounge with its free wifi and board games. A sports complex with a sauna, weight and fitness room, plus squash and tennis courts, is nearby as well if you’re not too tired after trekking… The toilet and shower facilities (with mixer taps rather than push buttons) at Camping Lou Gourdan are also modern and well maintained.

What customers say

Lovely campsite by river, near village. Top-notch, spotless facilities. Owners & staff are brilliant – super friendly & helpful. Peaceful, pretty setting, great pitches. Occasional road noise, but river sounds usually win out.

Fully-serviced grass and earth pitch

Liked The site is located in a great place - Puget Thenniers, in the heart of the Alpes de Maritimes - it is a small but by no means compact site with fully serviced pitches, with lots of trees offering plenty of shade for those hot and sunny days.
Puget Thenniers is a quintessential French village with cafes, restaurants, and shops, and is situated on the convergence of 2 rivers, making it very scenic.
The site is run and looked after by Fabrice and his wife, and between the pair of them make this site exceptional
With clean facilities such as toilets, showers, wash rooms, washing up facilities, laundry room (with ironing if required), reception area, where you can order fresh breads for the following day, orders of pizzas can be placed in the small bar area at the back of the site together with ice’s, coffee’s etc.
The front man Fabrice is the nicest man you could meet, with nothing being to much trouble, as an example the air conditioning on my car failed whilst we were there, and Fabrice gladly phoned a local garage and arranged to have my car looked at the following day, absolutely nothing is to much trouble.
So to summarise:
Beautiful location
Beautiful site - nature inspired
Beautiful owners
Restful and relaxing.

Disliked Absolutely nothing

Liked We had a great stay here. It's a lovely little campsite in a quiet location, exactly what we were looking for. The toilets and showers were exceptionally clean and well looked after. We arrived a bit later than planned, but the owners kindly waited for us, which we really appreciated. They were very friendly and welcoming. We'd happily stay here again and would definitely recommend it.

Liked Very friendly and super helpful owners, just nice people! Sowers and toilet facilities are 10/10, so clean and generously sized.

Disliked Pitches were a tad scruffy, but I’d think that was down to the extended heatwave and weather conditions.

Liked Really friendly and helpful owner from arrival through to leaving. The best toilet block ever and I've stayed at lots of places. Best suited for couples or small groups. We had our 3 year old granddaughter with us and although no problem (as we were only there for one night) there would have been little for her to do. Having said that we will definitely return as a couple in the future.

Disliked Nothing. Great place!

Local attractions

You might need to book several weeks off work to maximise your time in this activity-packed area: there are many mountain biking trails to take – ask on site for recommendations – as well as cool canyons including Riolan, AIglun and the Saint-Auban (all less than 50 minutes’ drive away) for fishing and dips in clear waters. Enroute, explore mountain towns for a look at alpine life: Entrevaux, under 10 minutes’ drive away, has a medieval fortress and houses spilling down a hilltop while Annot (just over 20 minutes) is a pretty place with a backdrop of unusually shaped sandstone boulders. For driving trips a touch further on, get in the car and head towards Mercantour National Park through Clans for the Col de la Bonette – the highest paved road in Europe – or take another route via Cians to see the red-rock gorge. Southwards takes you away from the mountains and down to the coast, with the popular city of Nice being an hour and 10 minutes’ drive.
