Beau indeed are the surroundings at Camping Beau Rivage, a green and tree-lined place on the banks of the Gave d’Oloron river and a 10-minute walk from the medieval bastide town of Navarrenx. This is a top spot if you’re into fishing – this stretch of the river has hosted the World Salmon Fishing Championships for over 40 years now, and is a popular spot for amateur anglers to try their luck too. A watersports centre is 15 minutes' walk away too, or you could stay on land to try out many walking and cycling routes from relaxing riverside rambles to more intrepid outings in the Pyrenees. Time spent on site can be filled with games of table tennis and pétanque followed by cooling swims in the outdoor pool or clambering fun at the playground for smaller guests. There’s plenty of scope for foodie foraging in town, with all manner of restaurants, bakeries, shops and supermarkets a 10-minute stroll away, but if you'd rather fuel up om site, there are communal barbecues as well as a snack bar open in high season. If you’re still in any doubt as to the fabness of this place, refer to the words left by previous guests, with one particularly glowing review declaring ‘when I die and go to camping heaven I want it to be just like this’. Grand spot with sound staff, clean loos, and a lovely river walk to a history-filled town. Pool's a winner, proper quiet too. Good for a stopover or exploring. A few found pitches a bit snug, loos busy at times. Bar/pizza times were a bit hit-or-miss.

Liked Beautiful campsite with a mix of Motorhome and van/tent pitches. Some in shade, others less so. Swimming pool on site, visiting snack vans in high season. Very clean loos. Great location- 5 minute walk into beautiful town

Liked A lovely quiet site with great amenities. Close to town which had great restaurants. Toilets and showers were very clean. The pitch was spacious and nicely protected with bushes

Liked Amazing place by a river, near a city, within walking distance, where we can buy food and drinks in a Carrefour Express very well supplied. Camping has insite bar and fast food options. Infrastructure is clean and well organized. The pitch is comfortable and very well placed.

Local attractions

Potter down to Navarrenx to wander the ramparts of the fortified town, cross the 13th-century bridge and learn about one of the local industries at the House of Cigar. Just below the ancient walls is a moat that now houses the town’s tennis courts, and there’s also a golf club a 10-minute drive away that was newly opened in 2017 and has gorgeous views towards the Pyrenees from its greens, driving range and miniature golf course (not one for those easily distracted by pretty things, perhaps). Make a splash on the Gave d’Oloron river by signing up for activities at the watersports centre 15 minutes’ walk from the site; rafting, canoeing, kayaking and paddleboarding are among the watery pursuits available here. Meanwhile, up in the woods at Domaine Nitot, a 10-minute drive away, you can take to the treetop trails and then zipline back to solid ground before attacking your friends and family in a paintballing game. Folk feeling weary at the mere mention of all this activity have gentler days out to hand too, such as a trip to Salies-de-Béarn, half an hour away, where you can wallow in thermal waters and unwind in the salt caves.
