  • Marina and bar a short walk away; Southend-on-Sea 25 minutes’ drive
  • Fishing lake, dog-walking area, walking paths and a play area
The clue’s in the name at Riverside Village Holiday Park. This well-located Essex holiday park is on the south bank of the river Crouch, with its waterfront footpaths giving guests views of the resident swan family and wispy willow areas. Not just that – it also has a fishing lake for visiting anglers, a designated dog-walking area for easy walkies and a play area with swings where the kids can let off steam whenever they fancy it. A few more words must be said about the park's excellent location, 15 minutes’ drive from Rochford. A local bar and marina are a short walk away for waterside coffees and boats across to Burnham-on-Crouch. You’re also just a quick trip from the seaside, with Southend-on-Sea’s lively seafront amusements sitting 25 minutes’ drive away. Transport connections are also nice and convenient. It’s a 15-minute drive to London Southend Airport and an hour to Stansted. Rochford, 15 minutes’ drive away, has trains to London Victoria and other stations. Back at Riverside Village Holiday Park, you're all sorted on practicalities. Despite being spread across 24 acres of the lush Essex countryside, each area on site has good access to toilet, shower and waste disposal facilities. You can pick up any bits and bobs you may need from the on-site shop, saving a bigger grocery haul for the supermarkets in Rochford if needed.

What customers say

Mixed reviews: clean facilities, friendly staff, lovely nature get praise. But pitches are an issue, it's too crowded, noisy and some feel unsafe. Booking's tricky, rules unclear, and facilities are basic for the price.

Mallards electric grass pitch

Liked How quiet it was and peaceful

Disliked When booking nothing said fishing lakes have dried up. So no fishing the only reason why I booked this

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: I appreciate that you were disappointed there was no fishing. There is a country wide drought and a lot of fishing lakes in this area are now dry.

Thank you for booking with us.

Liked Clean, safe site with basic but fully functioning services. Friendly and helpful staff in a very pleasant setting.
This was a first introduction to camping for our 6 year old grandson and he had the best time, thank you

Disliked Nothing. Can't fault the site for what it has. Everything worked and showers/toilets were clean. An excellent site for anyone who wants and introduction to the world of camping

Woodpecker non-electric grass pitch

Liked The shower was hot. Facilities were clean.

Disliked This is not a touring campsite. There are around 300 static caravans that people clearly reside in. The electric field is full of long term pitches which appear to be belonging to people working at the near by industrial estate. It did not feel like a family friendly campsite.
We arrived around 7pm and reception was closed , which we knew and expected and had put on our booking, and only a note pinned to show which field to park no further info offered. Asked to go back in the morning to check in which we did but was given no additional check in details and a very cold greeting- not at all welcoming.
Shortly after arriving a police car arrived on site with lights and sirens. It went down further into the site and left about 40 minutes later. Not very reassuring and did nothing to make us feel safe.
To get to the showers and toilets from the non electric field was a 1/4 mile walk each way. Only 3 showers and 3 toilets for the site. Showers were hot and fairly powerful but you had to hold a button down and the cubicles were tiny and hard to manoeuvre with a child. Only one peg in the shower cubicle.
The site is by the river and has lots of wildlife which is lovely however the rivers were dried up and they were full of dead rotting fish! They had clearly been there a while and nothing done about it.
There was a general lack of respect for others on the site- the first night there were children running around and screaming and shouting until gone 11pm. The pitch next to us was playing loud dance music until gone 1am- I dared not approach them to ask it to turn it down as the adults were clearly intoxicated and were using very loud, aggressive swear words and insults at each other for many hours. The children were also using this language at each other and their parents.
The next night there was again screaming and shouting until gone 11pm and a group of 3 tents of teenagers had pitched behind us. They proceeded to roam around the site talking very loudly and played a game of what appeared to be man hunt until the early hours of the morning running around ours, and others, vans screaming and shouting.
There was a very strong smell of marajuana coming from a number of places around the site - both in the morning and the evening.
We were booked for 3 nights but stayed 2 and preferred to drive home through the night rather than stay another night. We felt unsafe here. We did not report to the night warden as the number was displayed on the reception 1/4 mile away and did not feel safe to walk there in the dark. We left before reception was open the next morning as we did not want to stay any longer. This type of information should be printed and given out upon arrival or emailed before arrival.
It is a shame as there is a limited number of sites in this general area. The website is misleading and this is not a place for a family holiday or even a base for families visiting the area.

From the manager: Hi Alanya, I'm sorry you didn't enjoy your experience at Riverside Village. Our aim is to give you a nice rest. The static caravans are owned by over 50's and not residential, and the seasonal pitches (the tourers here for the entire season) are owned by people who visit for weekends or short stays, just like a tourer, but already set up and ready, and, again, vastly owned by the over 50s. This information is readily available on our website. The dried up waterways on site are due to the country wide drought, and I assure you, we have been on clean up as much as possible. The shower block is where it is due to planning permissions, which is why we have the portable toilets down on the touring field. You also could have asked to use accessible bathroom if you were struggling with a small child in the ladies shower area, we would have been happy to help. The use of illegal substances is prohibited on site, and was dealt with. You could have reported all these issues in reception, and they would have been addressed at the time. We take the comfort of our guests very seriously, and have repeat customers that come back, with their families and friends, year after year. I am sorry you felt we fell below your standards. I wish you well on your camping adventure.

Mallards electric grass pitch

Liked Nothing, the facilities were dirty including blocked toilets in the one and only main shower/toilet block. The toilets in the field we were in were portaloo’s. There is no security barrier at the main entrance it’s just wide open
24/7. People close by were smoking weed day and night which stank. At one point we were stopped at the entrance by foreigners who photographed our car. When confronted by my husband they just claimed not to be terrorists. However it was very unnerving. We were told by other campers they were stopped and asked for drugs.

Disliked Everything

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Hi, I shall address each issue you have raised in order.
The facilities are cleaned and replenished twice daily, so if they are bit messy in between, that's down to them being used by our customers throughout the day. Council planning has restricted us in where our shower block could be built, hence the extra, non-permanent toilets on the camping field, so you don't have to trudge half way up the site in the middle of the night :) The site rules being breached is something we take very seriously, and the issue was addressed. The people causing issues at the entrance were sent on their way and reported to the police. Our aim is to make your stay as pleasant as possible, and I am genuinely sorry you have experienced the park at less than it's usual beauty. I hope you would reconsider and come visit again another time. We appreciate your comments and will take them on board.

Kindest regards and deepest apologies

Local attractions

What’s first on the agenda? If it’s the beach, head into Southend-on-Sea (25 minutes’ drive), where the long stretch of sand is backed by a promenade and the lively rides of Adventure Island. You could be riding a rollercoaster or whizzing through the sky in no time – fish and chips awaiting you on the ground, preferably after (and not before) such antics. The big wheel has stunning views over the town, so see if you can pick out landmarks like the Palace Theatre or Cliffs Pavilion. There’s plenty more to browse along the local coast, from the cockle sheds and cobbled streets of old Leigh-on-Sea (half an hour) to the RSPB Wallasea Island Wild Coast project (10 minutes). Get out those binoculars to look for diving terns and other birds wading in the lagoons. Perhaps you might want to bid goodbye to your Essex getaway with a family bike ride? Hadleigh Park (35 minutes) is a stunning spot for that, with its country park trails – and it has bike hire too. Experienced mountain bikers can try out its Olympic mountain-biking trails for a bit more of a thrill.
