When you’re after spectacular mountain views on an almost wild Lake District camping break, Hollin Head Campsite is a top contender. Set on a family hill farm running a flock of Herdwick sheep, the spacious pitches sit in a tree-sheltered camping meadow by the side of the burbling River Esk. There are scenic walks along the Esk from the pitches, and numerous fell and mountain hikes right from the campsite gate. If you like the sound of a pint at the end of your day, there’s also a pub within five minutes’ stroll, and when foodie supplies are running low, you can stock up on pretty much everything at the local shop in Eskdale (five minutes’ drive). Well-behaved dogs are more than welcome to accompany you on your Lake District adventure, but please keep them on leads at all times while on site, due to the proximity of the sheep as well as cows grazing nearby. Small firepits and barbecues are allowed by your pitch; just be sure to raise them off the ground to prevent the grass getting burnt. And as this peaceful, no-frills site is firmly off-grid, please note that there are no showers or electric hook-ups; simple facilities include clean portable loos, a drinking-water tap and recycling bins.

Liked Everything.
Location nestled in a valley right next to the river. Very calm place to me. Portaloos were probably the cleanest I've ever used. Liz was very friendly and welcoming.

Liked Amazing place,the host was so lovely has an onsite drinking water tap. The porta potties were so clean and had all the cleaning products if needed. There is a beautiful river perfect for wild swimming and big enough for a paddle board! It rained all weekend I was there but still had an amazing time! There is plenty of room making sure there is space between campers and all the other people on site were lovely! It was quite a difficult drive but easy to navigate using maps as long as your prepared to go down right twisty roads. Whilst there I had very limited signal but what do you expect on the lakes!

When being outside in pristine Lake District air is the number-one priority, you’ll be pleased to learn that there are many options for walks right from the pitches. You can hike up to Blea Tarn in Eskdale in around 25 minutes, and for longer forays, head along the river gorge to the spectacular Stanley Ghyll Waterfall (an hour and 40 minutes on foot). Experienced cyclists might like the challenge of biking the stunning Hardknott Pass (half an hour by pedal power). Families can keep busy kayaking and paddleboarding at West Lakes Adventure (five minutes’ drive), or go ghyll scrambling on the surrounding fells. If you have younger kids with you, chances are they’ll fall in love with their cuddly companions at Wastwater Alpaca Trekking (half an hour) as you all stroll through the scenic Wasdale Valley. The World Owl Centre at Muncaster Castle (15 minutes) is also a good bet for wildlife-loving kids. To bring a cultural note to your Lake District sojourn, the neolithic Swinside Stone Circle (35 minutes) sits on the deserted slopes of Swinside Fell, surrounded by grazing sheep. Dating back two millennia, Hardknott Roman Fort & Thermae (15 minutes) was once a thriving Roman garrison; there are more ancient Roman remains at Ravenglass Roman Bath House (also 15 minutes).
