  • Family-friendly site in the stunning Loire valley
  • Five minutes’ walk from canoeing, kayaking, boat trips on the Loire
  • An hour’s drive from Puy du Fou theme park
Does a stay in the stunning Loire Valley, close to castles and vineyards, and moments from the banks of the mighty Loire float your boat? If yes, then stroll on over to Camping de la Promenade, a family-friendly site less than five minutes’ drive from the town of Montjean sur Loire in the Pays de la Loire region. La Promenade is a top spot for active getaways: cycle off on the 900-kilometre Loire à Velo route, which passes through Montjean sur Loire, get out on the river with canoeing or kayaking, or get under the water with some diving. For more sedate exploration of the Loire, take a boat trip from Montjean, or let the on-site team help you plan something else in the area. Need a break from your adventuring? Spend a day or two hanging out on site, where there’s plenty to keep you entertained: send the kids to the playground while you take to the volleyball court, then reconvene to challenge each other in pétanque or ping pong. During high season, you can spend an afternoon at the indoor (April to September) and outdoor (July and August) pools, while les enfants spend time at the kids' club. There’s a snack bar on site for when you get peckish, and the grocery store should have everything you need for a barbecue (there’s a supermarket five minutes away if not). If you want to venture off to treat yourself, there are plenty of restaurants to try within 10 minutes.

This campsite boasts a superb riverside location, ideal for cycling and exploring the Loire region, with a short walk to local amenities. Staff are consistently praised for being friendly and helpful. Facilities, including swimming pools and bar, are generally clean and well-maintained, with ample activities for children. Liked Ease of booking and convenient location.
General cleanliness in washrooms was good.
Staff lovely and friendly.

Disliked Very noisy, ‘entertainment’ was unnecessarily loud. Terrible karaoke at full volume could be heard until 11pm.
Pitches very small and the place seemed very tired.
The food was terrible.

Fully-serviced grass pitch

Liked The site is in a superb location for visiting the Loir Region, as the site is only separated by a quiet side road to the banks of the river.
The town is quaint with a number of bars and restaurants, cycle ways and foot paths leading from the site.
Amenities are typically French, with simple bar/cafe , indoor and outdoor pools. Everywhere extremely clean. Staff were all pleasant and helpful.
We would return the location is perfect a great stop over for a couple of nights.

Disliked The entertainment went on until 11pm and was loud on the nights we stayed, but not ridiculous.

Fully-serviced grass pitch

Liked Friendly, helpful staff; the food was on point. I could order fresh traditional French stick till 7 pm that night, also included a normal French baguette with a croissant and pain au chocolat.

Indoor and outdoor pools were nice; the site was generally clean the toilets were cleaned once per day.

Spoke to the receptionist, and the lady I first spoke to helped me set up my SIM card so I could put it into my router to get internet; she was very helpful.

Also, another receptionist spoke to our campsite outside of Calais, as they only spoke French, and when we got an email about our booking, it mentioned caravans no more than 6m, but ours was 8m, and she called for us to make sure we were still okay to use that site.

Disliked Pools at the height of the season were only open till 7 pm when we went. It was still very, very hot at that time of day. As our pitch had no shade, it was hard to cool down.

At night, when you wanted a shower in the shower block, as there is no door entrance into the block, it is open when the lights are on. All the gnats are around the lights and on the walls, so it really could do with being enclosed to try and prevent this as much as possible. Also, the toilet block is Unisex.

When we arrived, we were told which pitch we were allocated, but we paid for a service pitch and had to move. I did ask at reception if we could stay on that pitch but was told we couldn't, as we had paid for a fully serviced pitch, after I had got all set up with electric and also levelled. The new pitch was very uneven and far away from the amenities such as the shower block and the pool.

Evening entertainment was all in French, so unfortunately our child couldn't participate if he had wanted to; also, we felt like we couldn't as well

Liked We had an absolutely fantastic stay at this campsite and loved every minute of our 9-night holiday.

The facilities were spotless, with the amenities cleaned at least three times a day, if not more. There was daily entertainment, a lovely little market on Mondays, and the food at the bar was really good. The swimming pools were always clean, and we spent a few hours there almost every other day.

There are supermarkets just a few minutes away, and you can order fresh baguettes and pastries from the bar for the following morning, which was a great touch.

The owners and all the staff couldn’t have been more helpful. They were genuinely friendly, welcoming, and always happy to help. We would definitely recommend this campsite and would happily stay here again.

Liked Great site with plenty of shade (we were there in the heatwave). Entertainment for children looked good and the bar was friendly. The showers, WCs, washing up areas all clean and enough to be available at all times. Fresh bread and croissants can be ordered every day. The staff, quite a few who are young, are all really attentive if you have questions.

Disliked The wood pigeons in the trees messing up our van and kit. Use a wind out awning if you have one! WiFi was a bit patchy.

Local attractions

The entire area around Camping de la Promenade is a must-explore for history buffs: close at hand are the stunning Château de Serrant and L’Epinay windmill, while a trip into Angers (less than half an hour’s drive) will get you to Château d’Angers and the medieval Maison d’Adam (home to the Angers artisans). If you’re happy with a longer journey, excursions to the fab Château de Brissac (it has its own opera house) and the troglodyte village of Rochemenier are within an hour, and there’s even some history for fans of the vin with a jaunt to the Vine and Wine Museum of Anjou-Saumur, half an hour away. Kids might be chafing at the bit by now, so if you’ve got some mini equestrians trotting along behind you, saddle up for an afternoon at L’isle Briand racecourse, 35 minutes from la Promenade (time your visit well and you might be around for the Anjou-Loire Challenge, the longest race in the world). If that doesn’t get them jumping for joy, try Le Jardin des kangourous, Terra Botanica theme park and the zoos at Boissière du Doré and Doué la Fontaine, or pile into the car for a trip to the spectacular Puy de Fou.
